Short Biography:

Rebbi Kalonymus Kalman Epstein (1754-1823), was a disciple of R' Elimelech of Lizhensk, and after his death, of most of his major disciples. R' Kalonymus Kalman continued his master's path of expounded on the role of the Tzaddik. One of the major themes found in his great work, Maor vaShamash, is the idea of Hamtakas HaDinim, (sweetening the severity of Divine punishment) The Tzaddik, through his personal service and his influence on the people to improve their ways, is able to sweeten or soften the severity of Heavenly judgment.
