Prohibition to use the Lights while they are Burning

• One is not allowed to have benefit from the light of the Chanukah candles. According to Rashi in the Talmud (Shabbos 21b) it is a sign that they are burning for the mitzvah.
• The Chanukah lights are a symbol of the Torah, as it is written, "The candle is a mitzvah, and the Torah is light. They wanted to sever the Jew's connection to the Torah. The Greeks were not after our bodies, they wanted to destroy the Jewish soul, and diminish the Jewish faith in Hashem.

  It says in Pirkei Avos that we shouldn't have any personal benefit form the Torah. "Hillel said . . . He who exploits the crown for his own aggrandizement, shall perish."
  Therefore we don't derive any benefit from the lights. (This is the reason for the Shammash, its light is what we are allowed to use. (Bnei Yissachar 3.9)

• The Ohr HaChayim relates a story that in Arabian countries the Jews were accustomed to eats locusts and grasshoppers. On numerous occasions they were plagues of them which would wipe out entire crops. The local leaders decided to stop eating them. This broke the strength of their shells (klipos) and there was never another plague. In the same manner we don't derive any benefit from the lights of the Menorah which are like the Torah. Our personal enjoyment strenthens the hold of the klipos.
